Manuscripts - "Radio's Age of Adventure", 1956-1964 and undated

 Series 4

This series concerns an unpublished biography of Havrilla written by his wife Marion in the 1950s and 1960s. Between 1958 and 1965, Mrs. Havrilla had written several drafts for the book. When she began writing the book, it was simply a biography of Alois Havrilla's career and a history of radio. In this original draft, she considered several different titles for it. By the final draft in 1965, she had settled on the title: "Radio's Age of Adventure." By this time, the nature of the book had changed drastically. Instead of a biography of her husband, it had become a pictorial history of radio illustrated with 485 photographs.

This series includes the original, intermediate, and final versions of the book. The original version of the book is broken down into 14 chapter and is 274 typewritten pages in length. It is not a complete biography; it only covers the period between Havrilla's birth in 1891 and being awarded the Diction Medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1935. It does nto cover the period between 1935 and his death in 1952. T

Another component of this series is the correspondence Mrs. Havrilla received between 1956 and 1964 from editors, her husband's associates, and others helping her to write the book.
