Photographs, 1867-1929

 Series — Box: 1 5

This series contains photographs of family members and their artwork as well as photographs of other persons. There are sixty-six family photographs spanning four generations of Barnes family members. They include photos of Duane Barnes, Cynthia Turner, Zadel Barnes Gustafson and her siblings, and Axel Gustafson. There are photos of Justin Barnes, Brian (Wald) Barnes, Fanny Faulkner, and five of her children; that there are no photos of Brian Barnes's first wife Elizabeth Chappell and her children, including Djuna Barnes, demonstrates that the collection belonged to the Faulkner/Barnes side of the family. Of note is one photograph inscribed "1887 long lost brother Albert," possibly a brother of either Zadel's or Brian and Justin's generation. There are eighteen photographs with unidentified subjects and of non-family individuals.

This series also includes five photos of paintings by Brian Barnes and eleven photos of paintings by John Faulkner, all color photos with the dates and dimensions of the original works typed on the back. John Faulkner (c. 1830-c. 1888), father of Frances Faulkner, was a noted landscape and marine painter in oil and watercolor. Born in Ireland, he was elected associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1852. After being expelled from this academy he left Dublin for the United States where he lived for approximately ten years. He later moved to London, where he became known for his watercolors. Additional information may be found in Old Master and Nineteenth Century Drawings and Watercolors, a Christie's of New York auction catalogue which includes four Faulkner works; it is located in Series IV: Miscellaneous.
