Scrapbooks, 1880-1901

 Sub-Series

Most noteworthy is Mrs. Gustafson's scrapbook containing a poem, "The Rune of the 'Vega's' Rudder" and a short story, "Laquelle?" published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine. There are also eighteen articles published in Harper's, Pall Mall Gazette, the Springfield Republican, the Boston Traveler, the Christian Union of London, the European Correspondent, British Women's Temperance Journal, and the National Philanthropist. These include reports on the temperance and suffragist movements of the United States and Europe, as well as personal sketches of political activists and artists. One such sketch is "The American Poet" about John Greenleaf Whittier, a poet whose correspondence and two books with dedications to Zadel Barnes Gustafson are in the collection. Also included in the scrapbook is a speech delivered by Mrs. Gustafson as a representative of the National Prohibition Association of Great Britain, "a woman suffrage organization in spirit and letter," which was published in the Women's Tribune. One article, "A National Prohibition Party," and manuscripts for other related articles reveal Axel Gustafson's participation in the prohibition movement. The scrapbook's last pages contain six pencil drawings, four of which are signed or initialed by Djuna Chappell Barnes and dated May and June 1911. Mrs. Gustafson's articles are listed in Appendix I.

The series also contains an autograph book with signatures and notes from some of Mrs. Gustafson's friends, acquaintances, and family. The items are arranged in a flat box, alphabetical by item type.
