Literary Works, Publications, and Notes, 1888-1931
This constitutes the core of the Barnes Family Papers and contains four novels, three collections of poems containing over 200 pieces, over 100 individual poems, and sixteen collected and individual short stories. Collected poems are listed in Appendices III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. Work notes are listed in Appendix IX. Many of the typescript copies appear to have been prepared for and sent to publishers. For example, see the 19 April 1931 letter filed with "Semper Fidelis, copy 2" to Messrs. Simon and Schuster.
The books of manuscript poetry are voluminous: the "Record" book contains close to four hundred pages of poetry. Among these poems is one entitled "To Djuna" written in 1915, which may refer to Ms. Barnes's budding talents: "Art--radiant--beckons: leave your gloomy night!"
Items are arranged alphabetically by title of piece or folders titled by genre.
