Memorabilia and Audio Tapes, 1936-1984

 Series 8

This series contains an award certificate, a scrapbook documenting a 1936 European vacation taken by the Whittemore family, and several recordings (one cassette and three open reel tapes).

The scrapbook includes extensive notes and journal entries by Dr. Edward Reed Whittemore, Sr. The scrapbook is from the June 27-August 18, 1936, family trip taken by Whittemore, his father, Dr. Edward Reed Whittemore, Sr., and his mother, Margaret (Carr) Whittemore. The trip took them to England, Belgium, Switzerland, and France through the steamship and tourist agent, H. [M.?] Weezey. The scrapbook includes almost daily entries, receipts, postcards, drawings, programs, menus, itinerary, photographs, brochures, maps, clippings, and a passenger list of the Red Star Line (one of the passenger ships used by the family). There is a July 5, 1936, newspaper photo of the young Whittemore with his parents (found in the journal entry for July 31).

Some of the other highlights include Whittemore's 1975 American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellow certificate and his 1984 University of Maryland, College Park, retirement certificate. The audiocassette, entitled "Reed Whittemore, A Whittemore Miscellany," features Whittemore reading his own poetry. Also, three open reel audiotapes consist of an interview by Susan Howe and Charles Ruas of Whittemore, and William Carlos Williams's son, Dr. William Eric Williams shortly after the publication of Whittemore's book, William Carlos Williams, Poet from Jersey. Excerpts of William Carlos Williams reading his own poetry are intermittently included throughout the interview.
