Correspondence, 1956-2006 and undated
Series I contains correspondence exchanged by Arthur J. Gutman with a number of correspondents, including Mencken Society members, Mencken collectors, and Mencken scholars. These documents cover topics related to H. L. Mencken, recent articles and publications on Mencken, and book collecting. Clippings were separated from letters, salient information from them recorded in a database attached as an appendix, and the originals discarded. Occasionally, photocopies of related clippings were filed with the letters in which they were originally enclosed. Manuscripts of articles and speeches were separated from the correspondence and arranged in Series III. Also separated were serial publications, which were arranged in Series IV. Correspondence relating to the purchase and restoration of the Mencken House in Baltimore is housed with related materials in Series VI, Mencken Society. The arrangement is alphabetical by correspondent and chronological within individual correspondents.
