General Correspondence, 1906-1976

 Sub-Series

Subseries 6 consists of correspondence between the Library Director's Office and individuals or organizations outside the university. The subseries is divided into eight general categories.

The first category, general correspondence, contains letters sent to the Director's Office from other universities, visiting scholars, publishers and vendors, and public libraries. Most of the correspondence relates to the acquisition of library materailas, and this category is arranged chronologically.

The second category is correspondence between the Director's Office and professional library associations on the local, national, and international levels. Among the many asssociations represented here are the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, the Mid-Atlantic Research Libraries Information Network, the Consortium of Universities of Washington, D.C. and the International Association of Technical University Libraries.

The third category consists of correspondence with professional, non-library organizations such as the American Association of University Professors, while the fourth category contains correspondence discussing library buildings, particularly McKeldin Library and UMAB's Health Sciences Library.

The fifth category consists of correspondence regarding candidates for the position of Director of Libraries in 1946, while the sixth category contains correspondence pertaining to the acquisition of many important library collections such as the Spiro Agnew papers, the East Asia Collection, the Katherine Anne Porter Collection, and Marylandia materials.

The seventh category contains correspondence regarding grants from the Higher Education Act and National Science Foundation, while the eighth category deals with the Victory Book Campaign during World War II. Except for the first category, which is arranged chronologically, the materails are arranged alphabetically by correspondent within the remaining categories.
