Deans' Office Files, 1940-1985

 Series 1

The correspondence, minutes, statistics and reports found in the series describe, in large part, the development and evolution of the curriculum and the general expansion of the college throughout its history. The minutes and statistics, each of which covers the bulk dates of the collection, provide the most insight into this growth.

Correspondence includes the chronological files of deans Marx and Scannell, memoranda and information distributed by the Graduate School of the university to academic units, and memoranda to the department chairmen of the college of Education.

Within the minutes eight administrative bodies are covered. However, there have been name changes in two faculty groups, which between them account for five of the bodies. The faculty council group began as the Planning and Advisory Council (1955-1966), then became the College Faculty Council (1966-1970), and finally the College Advisory Council (1971-1972). The meetings of the faculty as a whole began as Faculty meetings (1940-1967) and then changed to Faculty Assembly meetings (1967-1972). The other three bodies, department chairmen, the graduate committee, and the undergraduate committee, maintained consistent names.

Enrollment statistics exist for graduate and undergraduate students in separate categories. Some of the material is duplicated between groups, and charts and tables comparing the two levels are found in both categories. Within categories, the data have been divided into semester totals and overview reports covering more than one semester. In addition, the files of supporting data for college statistics also contain a great deal of enrollment information.

The materials are arranged alphabetically by document type, then chronologically.
