Subject Files-White House Central Files System, 1968-1974
Subseries 5 is the most voluminous grouping in the paper portion of the Spiro T. Agnew papers. These subject files cover almost every conceivable topic of interest to the American population and the staff of the Nixon/Agnew administration in the late 1960s and early 1970s. These files are also valuable for their extensive documentation of public opinion on these wide-ranging topics. They consist primarily of letters to Mr. Agnew on these issues of concern and the subsequent responses prepared by the vice president's office. Among the correspondents are many national and international politicians, sports figures, television and movie stars, and prominent authors, but the vast majority of the letters come from average American citizens. The files also contain occasional reports, publications, and other supplementary records. Topics for which significant amounts of documentation have been maintained include: the federal government and its organizations; gifts to and from the vice president; messages and invitations to and from various groups; and national security and defense. Among other major subjects are political affairs; personal information about the vice president and his family; public relations, and Mr. Agnew's speeches and trips.
The subject files are arranged using the alpha-numeric coding system devised for the White House Central Files. A complete list of all the codes is available.
