Correspondence, 1970-2005
The bulk of this series consists of letters, notes, and cards written and received by Katherine Anne Porter. Correspondence written by Porter includes one letter to Henri Cartier-Bresson, a French photographer who produced portraits of Porter, and letters and cards to Clark Dobson and John David Horner. There is also one letter from Robert A. Beach, Jr., to Porter, which includes two manuscript copies of Porter's marked "The Franklin Library/Ballot/The Greatest Books of the Twentieth Century," and one letter from United States Senator Ted Stevens to Porter, regarding a request made by Dobson and Horner to have the U. S. flag flown over the Capitol in Porter's honor.
The series also contains one folder of correspondence from Robert A. Beach, Jr., to Dobson and Horner and one folder of Paul Porter's correspondence to Dobson. In addition to Paul Porter's letters to Dobson, the Paul Porter folder contains materials that were removed from Mr. Porter's copy of The Collected Essays and Occasional Writings of Katherine Anne Porter. The materials, undated, are a mixture of items, including autograph typewritten notes by Mr. Porter, his typewritten manuscript "Gertrude Stein and All That," an autograph note by Katherine Anne Porter, and a portion of a dust jacket for Porter's The Days Before. The file containing Dobson's 2005 letter to Beth Alvarez also houses the program for a performance of Sergei Prokofiev's War and Peace, performed at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, August 1974. Dobson attended this performance with Horner, Porter, and her nurse and friend, Addie Hubbard. The program is inscribed and signed by Porter and Addie Hubbard.
Arrangement is alphabetical by correspondent and chronologically within each folder; Katherine Anne Porter's correspondence is further arranged alphabetically by recipient's name.
