Subject Files, 1929-2004

 Series 1

The bulk of the records are alphabetically arranged in the following 27 subject categories. Files are comprised of branch materials unless otherwise noted. The categories and major areas of emphasis are as follows:

Annual Reports: including lists of officers;

Arts: reflects the cultural interests of the branch and activities undertaken in support of these interests. Much of this material in this file concerns the docent program at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Branch members served as guides when Prince George's County school children visit the museum;

Branch Leaders: includes lists covering 1975-1983;

Bylaws: include bylaws of the branch, the Maryland State Division, and the National AAUW;

Community: reflects branch concerns in community affairs. "Know Your County Government" pamphlets included along with material on recreation, housing, the courts, the Health and Welfare Council, and the College Park Library;

Corporate Representative: includes correspondence concerning institutional membership, University of Maryland College Park;

Directories: includes membership booklets;

Education: contains materials concerning elementary, secondary, higher education, and library issues. Topics covered include school construction, teacher shortages, public libraries, integration, and art in elementary schools;

Finance: includes budgets, cancelled checks, ledgers, tax forms, and treasurers' reports;

History: materials commemorating the 25th anniversary (1954), the 35th anniversary (1964), and the 50th anniversary (1979) are included as well as general history of the branch, list of charter members, and documents concerning the presentation of branch records to the McKeldin Library, Special Collections, and 50th anniversary scrapbook materials;

Hospitality: annual banquet programs comprise most of this file;

International Federation of University Women (IFUW): includes newsletters, fact sheets, structure committee materials, and conference reports;

International Relations: includes correspondence and printed materials on legislative issues, UNICEF, United Nations programs, Sierra Leone Project, and United Nations Day at UMCP;

Legislation: contains materials on the legislative program of the branch. Specific issues involve tax exemption, legislative reapportionment, and the Maryland Constitutional Convention;

Maryland State Division AAUW: includes newsletters, state convention material, handbooks, and correspondence;

Media: contains materials on mass media and the impact of television on children, and materials of the Metropolitan Area Mass Media (MAMM) Committee of the AAUW;

Membership: includes membership lists, handbooks, AAUW informational pamphlets and correspondence;

Minutes: includes branch and executive board minutes, president's notes, and some treasurers' reports;

National American Association of University Women (AAUW): includes materials of the Centennial Celebration (1981), the Headquarters Building Fund, the Headquarters Committee, and the Structural Committee;

Newsletters;

Prince George's County Interbranch Council: includes correspondence and miscellaneous items;

Program Development: contains materials on installation of officers, parliamentary procedure, and recent graduates. National AAUW program guides are included and materials used in branch programs on topics such as medical care, the family education, science and the layman, and technology;

Publicity: includes press releases, clippings, and AAUW Week materials;

Regional American Association of University Women: includes correspondence and conference proceedings from the South Atlantic Region (SAR) and the Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) of the AAUW;

Social and Economic Issues (Social Studies): includes brochures, correspondence, and announcements concerning aging, consumer affairs, the environment, mental health and mental health facilities in Maryland, and social services;

Status of Women: includes endorsements and recommendations of women for various local and state committees, correspondence, and materials on continuing education, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), family planning, finance, Title IX and the Women's Action Coalition (WAC).
