Office Files, 1923-1975

 Series 2

This series consists of a variety of files generated and collected during McKeldin's mayoral and gubernatorial terms, as well as a few files related to work done as executive secretary to Mayor William F. Broening of Baltimore. A complete set of appointment books from 1943 to 1974 details McKeldin's various public engagements. General correspondence files from the same period provide a picture of the nature of McKeldin's work in public office and include both letters addressed to McKeldin and letters written by him. McKeldin separated various "special" letters into binders throughout his career. Correspondents include Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover, and Eleanor Roosevelt. This series also includes certificates of appreciation, awards conferring honorary citizenship of several major cities of the United States, and honorary membership certificates for service organizations and social associations.

Other files in the series document the appointments McKeldin made as governor of Maryland. Two files concern the supervisors of elections and the commissioners of the State Accident Fund. Also included in the series are reports that McKeldin collected on a variety of topics for research purposes; the bulk of these materials deal with Maryland and Baltimore history, which were for McKeldin both an official interest and a hobby. Publicity items in the form of newspaper and magazine articles collected by McKeldin and his wife as well as other miscellaneous official papers and some campaign materials are included in the series. In addition, this series contains several political cartoons on or about McKeldin's career; McKeldin's staff created some of these cartoons for campaign purposes.
