Senate Campaigns-Joseph D. Tydings, 1961-1970
Series 2 is comprised of two subseries of files documenting the 1964 and 1970 campaigns of Joseph D. Tydings for the U.S. Senate. The records contain campaign brochures and other publications, correspondence, newspaper clippings, schedules, statements, and Tydings' campaign manual and campaign kit. Background information on other Maryland campaigns and political organizations is also included.
Tydings strongly supported federal aid to education, a federal tax cut, health care for senior citizens, establishment of a Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, and President Lyndon B. Johnson's Civil Rights program and War on Poverty. He opposed immigration quotas and right-to-work legislation designed principally as a union-busting tactic. Tydings' positions on these issues are reflected in this series. "Teas for Tydings" were used to promote his candidacy.
