Financial Documents, 1814-1845, 1880-1902, 1912, and undated
An examination of the financial documents reveals both Mason and Swann personal and business activities.
Thomson F. Mason maintained a bank account at the Bank of Potomac and was writing checks and conducting business within a month of his death on December 21, 1838. His wife continued to write checks on this account following her husband's death, signing them Betsey C. Mason. Their son, John Francis Mason, insured the family home, "Chestnut Hill", its contents and the wheat, rye, and oat fields in 1890 with the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Loudoun County, VA. Caroline R. Mason, their daughter-in-law, held stock and securities in the Pennsylvania Railroad, American Sugar and American Tobacco, among others according to a list prepared following her death in 1912.
In 1880, Thomas Swann's mother, Ellen Swann, married Ferdinand C. Latrobe. She paid for Thomas Swann to attend St. John's School in Sing Sing, NY in 1881 and 1882 and purchased white duck pants and vests, which the school required, for him.
Between 1880 and 1885, Thomas Swann was an active horseman, a member of the Elk-Ridge Fox Hunting Club of Baltimore and the National Jockey Club of Washington, DC. He purchased saddles, blankets and other equipment for a horse and paid for its boarding, upkeep, feed, and access to pastures. He also bought himself riding clothes and equipment. Swann was a well-dressed man, buying hats (opera and straw), gloves, shirts and collars, canvas and walking shoes and sporting boots. He went to the dentist, the chiropodist and bought cigarettes. In 1885, his checks were written on an account held at Alex Brown & Sons, Baltimore.
