The materials found in this series range from newspaper clippings to government memoranda to notes on plans for cross-examination in investigatory hearings. A large part of the series consists of correspondence. The bulk of these materials document Tydings' investigations into Senator Joseph McCarthy's 1950 charges of Communist infiltration of the State Department. The series also contains files on the Amerasia case that began in 1945 and records Tydings accumulated after his retirement from the U. S. Senate. Notable correspondents include Claire Boothe Luce; Henry L. Stimson; E. K. Stettinius; Payton Ford; Joseph McCarthy; Emmanuel Cellar; Harry Truman; Roscoe Pound; Abe Fortas; Cordell Hull; B. B. Hickenlooper; J. Edgar Hoover; Olin D. Johnston; Thurston B. Morton; Estes Kefauver; William Benton; and Owen Lattimore.
