Political Activities, 1958-1968 and undated
David Scull's intense interest in building and leading the Maryland Republican Party, particularly its moderate-to-liberal wing, is the focus of these records. Three major topics are included in this series: David Scull's efforts on the Montgomery County Republican State Central Committee (1958-1966), his work on the state-wide Maryland Republican State Central Committee (1962-1964), and his unsuccessful campaign for an at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives (1964). Other subjects include the reapportionment and redistricting battles that were a source of intense political controversy in the late 1950s and early 1960s and Elizabeth Scull's long involvement with the Women's Republican Club of Silver Spring, circa 1958 to 1966. Also included are files on the abortive 1964 presidential campaign of William Scranton and considerable material from the Montgomery County Republican Committee during the period circa 1960 to 1966, when Don Kendall and then Gilbert Gude succeeded David Scull as chairman.
This series includes newspaper clippings; correspondence; political flyers and brochures; meeting minutes; financial records; press releases; party platforms; and records of individual dinners, political rallies, and other public events.
The series is arranged alphabetically by topic.
