Maryland Room, 1944-1971
Series I consists of the records of the Maryland and Rare Book Room in McKeldin Library from 1953 to 1970, as well as related University of Maryland documents. Also included are examples of Hayes's work as editor of two campus publications, Library News and Maryland Magazine. Types of materials included are statistics, correspondence, book orders, memoranda, meeting and committee materials, publicity, and newsletters. Included in the correspondence are letters exchanged with other librarians, donors, and researchers pertaining to library holdings and acquisition of new items. There are separate correspondence files for Wilson H. Elkins, Dr. Irvin Kerlan, Theodore R. McKeldin, and J. Millard Tawes as well as some employees of the University Libraries. Memoranda document the internal operations of the Maryland Room and the Library staff. The staff included are Isabella Hayes (Head of Maryland Room), Miss Anna Mary Urban (Interlibrary Loan), H. B. Schell (Assistant Director of Libraries, Reader's Services), Albert M. Turner (Head of Acquisitions), and Howard Rovelstad (Director of Libraries).
