 Series 4

This series includes correspondence, clippings, invitations, speeches, minutes, reports, and research related to Richard Hubbard Howland's employment at Johns Hopkins University, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Smithsonian Institution. Materials documenting Howland's presidency of the National Trust for Historic Preservation includes drafts of and correspondence related to Howland's 1956 study outlining the future programmatic and organizational needs of the National Trust that eventually led to the organization's first significant endowment. Also of note is correspondence concerning Howland's resignation from the National Trust in 1960. Material concerning Howland's employment as Special Assistant to Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley includes correspondence and minutes related to meetings with First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedy and Lady Bird Johnson.

Also documented are Howland's membership activities in numerous organizations and boards and his publications – The Architecture of Baltimore and other scholarly work. Most of the research and manuscript material concerns Baltimore and Maryland architecture.

The series also includes documents related to Howland's many trips abroad for scholarly and professional reasons, most of which concern Howland's trips to Greece and his organization of a trip to Dublin, Ireland, in 1959 on behalf of the Society of Architectural Historians.

The bulk of the material in this series dates from 1947 to 1997. Material is arranged alphabetically by type of activity: employment, organizations and boards, publications, research, and travel, which reflects the original arrangement by Howland.
