Photographic Material, 1885-1976

This series contains 159 glass plate negatives, 170 prints, 83 film negatives, 41 drymounted images, and two oversized photographs, one of which has a matching film negative. Some of these images are duplicated in different formats, as indicated in the inventory. Entries in the inventory refer to the envelope in which the prints, glass plates, and/or film negatives were found or the mat board to which the photographs are attached.

Boxes 1 through 4 in this series consist of both photographic prints and film negatives, and these images are retained in the order in which they were received. When a glass plate negative was found in the envelope with the print and/or film negative, it was moved to Boxes 5 and 6, and a note, containing its assigned image number (#) placed in these binders. All the folders correspond to the assigned number (#). The prints and negatives document a wide variety of horticultural topics and facilities; University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students; campus activities; sites around the city of College Park and the state of Maryland; and vegetable and flower shows, among many other subjects.

Boxes 5 and 6 contain glass plate negatives. Because they are fragile, use of these glass plate negatives is restricted.

Box 7 contains 131 photographs mounted on mat boards with accompanying captions. It is unclear who created these boards, but the photographs depict horticulture-related activities. Subjects include Horticulture Department students and faculty; the student Horticulture club; farming methods; "Green Lane" orchards in Hancock, MD; Gardenour's orchards at Smithsburg; Harrison's orchards; meetings of the Maryland Horticultural Society; and fruit packing and storage. These boards also depict campus-related places and events such as the University of Maryland campus entrance gates and other buildings and special events at the university.

This series is arranged in the order in which it was received.
