General Research, 1948-2003
This series consists primarily of published materials that Gayle used in researching her works on the history and production of cast iron. Many of these materials were annotated by Gayle. Materials in this series include photocopies of foundry catalogs and articles on the various functions and forms of cast iron, on the production of iron and other building materials, and on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century architects. This series also includes photographs, slides, and stereocards. There are also materials that provided background on Gayle's introduction for a reprint of a J.B. Wickersham catalog, Victorian Ironwork: a Catalogue. The research materials contained in this series also contributed to Gayle's publications for the National Park Service, a monograph co-written with John G. Waite: Metals in America's historic buildings: Uses and Preservation Treatments and The Maintenance and Repair of Architectural Cast Iron, a pamphlet.
