New York City General, 1950-1999
This series includes materials on various cast-iron structures in New York City. Structures represented include Jefferson Market Courthouse (now Library), St. Bartholomew's Church, the Alice Austen House, Harlem's fire tower designed by James Bogardus, the Old Sun Clock, and various statues and fountains.
Some of the materials in this series relate to The Art Commission and the Municipal Art Society Guide to Manhattan's Outdoor Sculpture, written by Gayle and Michele Cohen, and Three St. Bartholomew's: an Architectural History of a Church, containing a section written by Gayle. The series also includes scrapbooks containing clippings of Gayle's news column, New York's Changing Scene, published in the Daily News. Materials in this series include correspondence, published articles and research notes, photographs and slides, and newspaper clippings.
