Military Records, 1771-1951 and undated
Correspondence, reports, bounties, commissions, discharges, pension applications, powers of attorney, muster and pay rolls, publications, and newspaper clippings documenting general military affairs and the American Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Subjects covered include: enlistments of enslaved people; troop movements and battles; fortifications; various military units, in particular the Maryland National Guard, Maryland Militia, and Smith's Independent Cavalry Company of the Maryland Volunteers; guard duty; prison camps, such as Andersonville and Point Lookout; conditions of the troops on the battlefield and in the hospital; military supplies; back pay and benefits for soldiers, sailors, and their survivors; veterans organizations; civilian and military life in Maryland during the Civil War, including the Baltimore riots; military graves; biographies of officers; and opinions concerning the Civil War. Significant figures represented in this grouping include: John Pendleton Kennedy, Thomas Sim Lee, James Madison, Samuel Smith, Augustus W. Bradford, Joseph Hooker, George B. McClellan, Edward F. Jones, and Lawrence Sangston.
