Local Unions, 1880-2007

While the vast majority of local union files contain very little information from the local itself and instead consist entirely of letters between the local and the international headquarters as well as some clippings from The Carpenter, the subseries does contain meeting minutes for Local Union 1126 in Annapolis, Maryland for 1902-1944, 1960-1964 and 1970-1972.

Folders are arranged by local union number. If there is more than one folder for a local union, the folders are arranged alphabetically. Whenever possible folder titles indicate the geographic location of the local union and the founding/dissolution dates (in parenthesis) of the local. Local union number assignments have changed over time, so occasionally local union numbers were reassigned to other geographic locations. For this reason, some folder titles may list multiple geographic locations and founding/dissolution dates. If a geographic location, founding date, and/or dissolution date was not known, it was not included in the folder title.

Some information about local unions is included in Series 3: Financial Information. The "Old Books" and "New Books" are bound ledgers which the union used to record financial information about each local. They contain the locations of the locals and some entries list when the local was chartered and disbanded.

Some of the locals were originally Wood, Wire and Metal Lathers' or Tile, Marble and Terrazzo Finishers unions, some of which can be found in subseries 4.4: Merged Unions. The type of materials in these folders is similar and it is unclear why they were separated. The division has been retained in order to preserve the files' original order.
