The Carpenter, 1881-2015

 Sub-Series

The Carpenter newspaper and magazine was printed monthly until 1989, when the publication slowly decreased in frequency. It is currently only published once a year. The newspaper contained several pages in German until World War I. The publication includes information on national policies that affect the union, as well as articles about the activities of local unions and individual members.

The Carpenter from 1881 to 1904 are bound together. Some of the original physical copies may be restricted from use by researchers due to the fragility of the volumes. With permission from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA), the University Libraries has digitized The Carpenter from 1881-1989 as part of its participation in the Lyrasis Mass Digitization Collaborative. Digital copies of The Carpenter from 1881-1988 are available via the links in the folder inventory. Each issue may be downloaded as an Adobe PDF file from the Internet Archive and may be searched individually for names and events.

The volumes issued before 1905 were primarily digitized from microfilm copies to facilitate the digitization process and protect fragile originals; however pages that were illegible or had missing information on the microfilm were then scanned from the original volumes whenever possible. Some pages in the online versions may reflect this as they alternate between black and white and color pages. Informational value was considered the higher priority over aesthetics.

Although only the issues from 1881-1988 are currently available online, the archives also holds physical copies of the issues from 1990-present.

This subseries is arranged chronologically within each format (paper, microfilm, and digital).
