Madelo Family, 1935-1940s
This subseries consists of photographs from the Madelo Family, primarily of group events and portraits of Madelo family members. Silverio Madelo (1903-1978) moved to the United States with his sister, Apolonia Lacre Madelo, in 1929 (1). They joined their brothers who were already living in the US: Calixto (1894-1968) in Washington, D.C., and Emiliano in Montana (2). They arrived in Seattle, but quickly moved to Washington, D.C., to be with Calixto... and his wife Colleen (3).
Apolonia soon moved to California and married Ceferino Ladesma Jamero, whom she had known in the Philippines (4).
Silverio married a woman from Virginia named Lucy and worked as a teletype operator at the War Department and as a cab driver during World War II and lived on 18th Street NW (5). The prominent Filipino author, Bienvenido Santos lived in Silverio's house and mentioned him in one of his books, Scent of Apples. During the 1950s, Silverio and Lucy moved to California. Lucy died in the 1970s and Silverio returned to the Philippines where he married Aurea and moved back to California. Their daughter, Adele, was born in 1978, the year Silverio died (6).
Calixto and Colleen moved to Baltimore before the end of the war, living on North Charles Street, and Calixto worked as a servant for former Maryland senator Ovington E. Weller (7). In 1967, Calixto suffered a stroke and died several months later in California (8).
It also includes a framed photograph of a luncheon hosted by President Quezon for the Filipino Executive Council of Washington, D.C. in 1942.
