Thomas B. Symons, 1951-1955 and undated

This series contains correspondence, reports, publications, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, photographs, and other materials which record Thomas B. Symons' activities as Acting President from January to September 1954. Symons succeeded Harry Clifton Byrd as president; consequently some correspondence from Byrd appears in several of the files. The records document a variety of campus issues and events, including the budget, the activities of several of the University of Maryland's colleges, the university's relations with government agencies, and building construction. Also included are materials which chronicle the establishment of a faculty club in the Rossborough Inn and files pertaining to faculty, students, and the university's connections with community, professional, and civic organizations. Significant correspondents include Louis Goldstein, Harry Clifton Byrd, Wilson Elkins, and Major General Milton A. Reckord. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. Some files are restricted due to privacy issues related to student or personnel records.
