Maryland WPA Photographic Collection, 1934-1943 and undated
This series, which was not microfilmed, consists of black and white photographs ranging in size from 3x2 to 11x14 inches, along with a number of negatives. The photographs were taken to document the activities of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the WPA in Maryland from 1934 to 1943. Activities depicted include construction and repair of buildings, airports, highways, sanitation facilities, and water and sewer systems; conservation of natural resources; library, art, museum, and music projects; the Federal Writers' Project; adult education programs for training domestics and non-professional personnel for hospitals; support for public education ranging from operating nursery schools to providing free lunches; and sewing projects to produce clothing for the general relief effort. A portion of the photographs were interfiled by subject in the general photographic collection of the Historical Manuscripts and Archives Department of the University of Maryland College Park Libraries. These photographs, which were located in the Subject Photographs - Print File collection, have been returned to the Maryland WPA Photographic Collection.
