William Green, 1900-1980

Images document William Green's career, from 1900 to his death in 1952, with a few photos of his funeral, buildings or structures dedicated in his memory, or ceremonies held at his gravesite. Most images are from his time as president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), from 1924 to 1952, particularly from the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. There are numerous images of Green with national and local labor leaders, including John L. Lewis, Philip Murray, George Meany, Walter Reuther, Frank Morrison, and Frank Duffy. There are also images of Green with important political leaders of the era, including Senators Robert Taft of Ohio and Robert Wagner of New York, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia of New York City, Secretary of Defense General George Marshall, and Presidents Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Dwight Eisenhower. Images of Green with President Truman are particularly numerous, There are a few images of Green with international figures, the most notable being Tetsu Katayam, first democratically-elected postwar prime minister of Japan. There are scant images of Green's personal life.
