Walter Reuther, 1942-1975, and undated

Includes images of Reuther during his career as head of the United Auto Workers (UAW), 1946-1970, as president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), 1952-1955, and as president of the AFL-CIO's Industrial Union Department, 1955-1970. Also included are images of memorial ceremonies and dedications in Reuther's honor, such as the dedication of the Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University. Most of the images date from the 1940s through the 1960s. Reuther is shown with national and international labor leaders including George Meany and William Green, and with political figures including Presidents Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson and Governors Averell Harriman and Adlai Stevenson. There are images of contract negotiations with the Ford Motor Company and General Motors and images of Reuther testifying before congressional committees. Other images, such as photographs of his trips to Germany and Italy, show Reuther's involvement in international affairs. Images of Reuther's personal life document him as a child and his family.
