Subject Files, 1931-1961
These are file headings created by Shishkin, part of which contain his personal correspondence 1931-1961. Among the most noteworthy letters are those from Illinois Representative Morton D. Hull (1927-1941) who financially aided Shishkin's college education. There are two letters of appointment to government posts addressed to Shishkin signed by President Franklin Roosevelt. Most of the correspondence in the series is between Shishkin and his co-workers in the labor movement and government service. A few letters are from AFL presidents William Green and George Meany.
The series also includes originals of Shishkin's speeches and book reviews, with a number of the reviews on Russian history and economic topics. Two folders contain the first several chapters of Shishkin's partial translation of the History of the Russian Revolution by Leon Trotsky, five chapters of which appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, April-May 1931. Other folders contain drawings and sketches by Shiskin as well as thirty years of comic poems, mostly about his co-workers. Much of the rest of the series pertains to Shishkin's academic work and student activities during his time at Columbia University in the late 1920s and early 1930s and includes files on the school's Russian Literary Society and Russian Student Association.
