Civil Defense, 1953-1969
In planning for national civil defense, the federal government established the National Defense Executive Reserve (NDER) in 1957, within the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization (OCDM), to maintain continuity in executive-level civilian leadership in event of atomic war. The records document AFL-CIO participation in these activities to ensure labor representation in civil defense. Included are minutes of the OCDM's Labor-Management Mobilization Policy Committee and civil defense plans for evacuation of AFL-CIO headquarters. Material types include correspondence, memorandum, reports, minutes, and other material.
