Correspondence, 1961-1978, bulk: 1965-1975
Contained here are correspondence and notes from telephone conversations ("telecon") between the Civil Rights Department and the U.S. Department of Justice, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Washington and regional offices, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the various state and local civil rights or fair employment agencies. The Justice Department materials are primarily notices of suits filed against local unions for "patterns or practices of discrimination." Correspondence with the state and local agencies concerns the establishment of procedures for sending the Civil Rights Department copies of complaints. Material in the EEOC correspondence covers the same topic, as well as that of the EEOC's negligence in following this procedure. Some information on cases is contained here. Most correspondence is incoming rather than outgoing. Also included are copies of correspondence between the EEOC and AFL-CIO President George Meany, other AFL-CIO departments, and non-AFL-CIO organizations, as well as EEOC internal memos.
