Personal Papers, 1961-1980
This series includes correspondence, clippings, and calendars dating from 1961 to January 1980. Predominantly comprised of the correspondence the president's office classified as personal, this series throws light on the extensive range of George Meany's connections both within and without the house of labor. A large amount of incoming and outgoing routine correspondence surrounding illnesses, birthdays, holidays, and Meany's retirement was eliminated, although the series contains enough of this type of correspondence to provide a general idea of these remembrances.
Although the vast majority of these letters are personal in nature, occasionally items on substantive issues appear. This seemed to be truer for the later years and particularly during the years of Jimmy Carter's presidency.
