Frank Pollara's Files, 1960-1979
Sub-series 1 spans the dates 1960 to 1979, but covers mostly the period 1971 to 1979. The materials consist of files maintained by Frank Pollara, a special assistant to President George Meany, and includes correspondence, clippings, and printed material created and collected by Pollara, by officers of the AFL-CIO, and by officers of the unions that were contemplating consolidation, a process for which Pollara was responsible.
Because Pollara also served as secretary of the AFL-CIO Ad Hoc Maritime Committee, there are also a number of files concerning constitutional and jurisdictional disputes between unions in the maritime trades. Many of the files include papers and documents with handwritten notes, presumably by Pollara. Researchers should be aware that many of these files concern mergers that never occurred.
