United Automobile Workers Disaffiliation Files, 1956-1969
Sub-series 3, containing clippings, correspondence and reports dates from 1956 to 1969, documents the growing rift between the AFL-CIO and United Automobile Workers (UAW), a fight that culminated in the withdrawal of the UAW from the AFL-CIO. The split focused on differences about international relations, organizing, strike support, and civil rights initiatives. Reciprocal suspension and disaffiliation occured in 1968, and most of the documents in the sub-series are dated 1966 to 1969. In July 1968, the UAW joined with the Brotherhood of Teamsters to form the Alliance for Labor Action.
