State and Local Organizations and State and Local Central Bodies, 1955-1979

 Series 3

This series documents the relationship between the Civil Rights Department and state/ local organizations and state/local central bodies on civil rights issues. It is comprised primarily of correspondence sent mostly to directors Boris Shishkin, Donald Slaiman, and William Pollard. The series also contains reports of the activities of organizations and central bodies, materials pertaining to conferences and conventions of organizations and central bodies, correspondence from central bodies to affiliated local unions and outgoing Civil Rights Department correspondence.

This series contains printed, near print, and manuscript material (correspondence, agendas, reports, press releases, clippings, minutes, speeches, resolutions, publications, conference materials, legal briefs, and newsletters). There may be some overlap with records in other series, particularly the Departmental and Administrative Files series.

This collection is open to the public and must be used in the Special Collections reading room. Researchers must register and agree to copyright and privacy laws before using this collection.

Arrangement

Folders are arranged alphabetically by state name and then in alphabetical and chronological order, respectively. Contents of folders are in either roughly chronological or reverse chronological order.

Processing Information

The series was weeded of duplicate material and some printed material, as well as material available elsewhere. Disintegrating newsprint was discarded and rusting paperclips and rubber bands were replaced with plastic clips or staples. Photographs have been removed and integrated into the Photograph series.
