The bulk of the material in this series consists of receipts for goods transported by Robert Garrett & Sons on railroads and ships between 1835 and 1860 but mainly in 1843. The firm used packets, schooners, steamboats, ships, and rail lines to carry goods to and from many American ports including Boston, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and ports in England. The packets and schooners on the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent and Potomac Rivers traveled between Baltimore and Alexandria, VA, Georgetown, DC, Annapolis and Chestertown MD, and other ports.
