Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation, and Markle Foundation, 1966-1993
This subseries contains documents related to funding and support offered to the Children's Television Workshop (CTW) by the Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation, and Markle Foundation.
The proposal to develop Sesame Street was initially funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1966. Lloyd Morrisett, who was Vice President of Carnegie then took the lead in building the funding for the series. Materials relating to the Carnegie Corporation's support include correspondence, memos, and meeting agendas.
The Ford Foundation joined the Sesame Street funding group to help develop the series curriculum in a series of planning seminars in the summer of 1968, then became a major backer of the series through program grants in 1968-1971. In 1972, discussions with Ford led to a long-term investment grant to CTW. Several materials in this subseries detail this involvement.
Finally, as Sesame Street production was in the planning, Lloyd Morrisett left Carnegie to become President of the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation, which then joined the initial funding group. This subseries also contains memos, correspondence, and general documents which provide evidence of this involvement.
The materials in this series have been arranged alphabetically according to their related funding organizations, and then roughly chronologically by format.
