Research Materials, 1953-1962

 Series — Multiple Containers 1

Lab notebooks, loose notes, and charts document several of Young’s simultaneous research projects. He conducted studies primarily related to the nutrition and general health of swine, particularly Hereford and Yorkshire breeds. Research files include data on the components of food rations for swine (such as hay, corn, barley, copper sulfate, or antibiotics) and the incidence of roundworm infections in swine. Oversize charts document research data on swine feeding and weight gain. Research materials dated between 1953 and 1957 reflect the work of Francis C. Wingert. Perhaps because Wingert’s work during this period served as the basis for his joint work with Young, the folders became integrated in Young’s files. Young may have used Wingert’s charts and notes as reference materials as the projects progressed. Swine were the test subjects in all of Young’s research projects: C-23 tracked the effect of protein levels on reproduction; C-24 traced worming compounds; C-27 monitored the effects of copper and aureomycin (antibiotic) on weight gain; C-28 compared barley, corn, and mixed rations and pellet vs. non-pellet feeds; and C-29 investigated the benefits of free-choice feeding. Arrangement is alphabetical; files with identical headings are arranged in chronological order.
