Chronological Files, 1968-2004
The majority of Ben Shneiderman's working papers comprise this series. These documents were kept in filing cabinets in Shneiderman's office at the University of Maryland. Documents highlight conference proceedings; research, lecture notes, and colloquium notes; professional organization literature; correspondence with other professionals; pamphlets and informational brochures from computer science-related corporations; trips; and the University of Maryland.
Particularly strong in this series is information surrounding Shneiderman's various major research projects, including presentations on the Computer-Human Interface; the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the University of Maryland; his books, including Designing the User Interface (1987), Software Psychology (1980), and Hyptertext Hands-On! (1988); and documentation of the various conferences in the field, including annual meetings of CHI (Computer-Human Interaction).
Arrangement is chronological. Since many folders span a range of years, an ordering scheme was imposed upon the files. Undated folders were placed as close to their original date as possible, followed by folders that spanned a series of years, and then by folders that contained information for only one year. The first document in each folder determines the first date in the span. Each folder was assigned a general "subject" heading in addition to Shneiderman's existing headings, at the time of processing. This heading is noted in brackets after the date for each folder in the box inventory. Categories include Colloquia, Conferences, Consulting, Correspondence, Courses, Editing, General, Indiana University, Information Processing and Management (IPM), Legal, Library of Congress, National Cash Register Corporation (NCR), National Science Foundation, Presentations, Professional Organizations, Publications, Research, Reviews, SUNY Farmingdale, SUNY Stonybrook, and the University of Maryland.
