Newspaper History, 1875-2006
This series contains materials that document the history of the News American and its predecessors. Items include manuscripts about the history of the newspaper (published and unpublished narratives), newspaper clippings, oral histories, and transcribed subscriber lists, including subscribers beginning in 1773. In addition, the collection includes documents concerning H.L. Mencken, Frank A. Munsey, R.P. Hariss and the Bicentennial Celebration. The bulk of the clippings are about the history of the Baltimore News-Post and News American as it was described in these publications, as well as in other publications including the Sun. A significant amount of newspaper clippings in the series contain biographical articles about journalists, editors and managers who worked for the paper. The series also houses information about Baltimore's early women journalists, the transfer of the Baltimore News American Collection to various archival repositories and the decline of the News American. Arrangement is alphabetical by newspaper title and then by subject. Folders labeled General are listed first and then the rest of the folders on the same level follow alphabetically. Material that could not be associated with a specific newspaper or spanned across several newspaper titles is listed at the end of the series in alphabetical order.
