Typefaces and ornaments, 1925-1978 and undated

 Sub-Series

This subseries includes the specimen sheets, specimen catalogs, and brochures amassed by Maurice Annenberg when he owned Maran Printing Company.

The specimen examples range from items as short as one page to substantial catalogs. Most specimen sheets include only one type face, but there are some on which there two or more type faces. For examples with two type faces, both are listed on the folder heading. For brochures containing more than two type faces, the company name appears as the folder heading. Individual folders may contain specimen brochures and/or price lists.

These type face samples were sent either by the type foundry that produced the type or the business that distributed the type. It was not always possible to determine if a publication originated with the type caster or the distributer. Folder headings enumerate type faces and company names. When available, the type designers' names are recorded after the type faces in the folder headings. Most of the specimen sheets or brochures are undated.

Type face families may include all variations of the type face—regular, italic, bold, light, medium, heavy, schoolbook, script, wide, roman, black, semi-bold, condensed, or any combination of these. Specimen sheets may include only one version of a type face or the whole family in a variety of points. There are specimen sheets for individual type faces from more than one company.

The folders are arranged alphabetically by type faces or company names.
