Correspondence, 1976-1982

 Series 3

This series contains correspondence written while Field was researching and writing the biography. Many of his queries were unproductive, but Field's carbon copies of his queries have been filed alphabetically by correspondent along with correspondence that received a reply. In some cases, Field kept enclosures sent by his correspondents with their replies; if so they remain in this series. Enclosures previously separated by Field are in Series IV, Research Materials, or Series VII, Photographs. Significant correspondents include Joella Bayer; Margaret Behrens; Fabienne Benedict; John Coleman-Holmes; Malcolm Cowley; James T. Farrell; Charles Henri Ford; Joseph Geraci; John Glassco; Susan Jenkins Light Brown; Nancy Kleinpoppen; Probate Court of Greenfield, Massachusetts; Albert Parry; Edouard Roditi; James B. Scott; the Society of Genealogists, England; Springfield City Library; Jim Walsh; Antonia White; Alden Whitman; and Yale University, Beinecke Library (Donald Gallup). Files containing significant enclosures are indicated in the box inventory. Correspondence with Joella Bayer, Fabienne Benedict, and New Directions contains photocopies of their correspondence with Djuna Barnes. Correspondence with Antonia White contains hand-copied excerpts from her correspondence with Emily Coleman. This series is arranged alphabetically by individual or corporate correspondent. Correspondence with various individuals concerning permission for publication of intellectual property in Field's biography are filed together under "Permissions."
