Correspondence, bulk: 1965-1992, 1957-2005

 Series 1

This series consists of correspondence received and sent by Frances McCullough in her role as a literary editor, as well as correspondence related to her research for a book on Djuna Barnes. Her correspondents include authors she worked with at Harper & Row and Dial Press, literary agents, critics, as well as McCullough’s agent, Irene Skolnick. Materials include marked and unmarked drafts, revisions, book proposals, publication plans, contracts, and clippings. The series is arranged by correspondent, then by date. Most letters are not arranged within the folders.

Some reply letters remain attached to the letters they were written in reply to, with the earlier letters behind the replies.

Two folders contain responses to a 1990 adverisement Frances McCullough and Mary Lynn Broe placed in the Times Literary Supplementand the New York Times Book Review seeking Djuna Barnes letters and anecdotes. These folders are at the end of the series.

Series 2: Writings of Others contains addtional correspondence attached to manuscripts and proofs as they were sent or recieved by McCullough.
