Biographical / Historical

A member of Carpenters’ Local #2311 (Pile drivers), 1976, is taken off the sheets on a Metro construction site in Washington, D.C. Sheet piling is used to build coffer dams in water situations. It is formed into a circle, then construction takes place inside the coffer from which the water and dirt have been removed. The worker helping to align the grooves of the sheet piles is called “the monkey,” and is paid more since the work is dangerous.
