Cigar Makers, 1895-1989, bulk: 1976-1984

 Series 1

This series consists of materials assembled by Cooper in preparing her book on the Cigar Makers International Union, Once a Cigar Maker: Men, Women, and Work Culture in American Cigar Factories, 1900-1919 (1987), including oral history interviews with 73 cigar makers who worked in factories (154 audio cassette tapes), oral history interview transcripts with 46 people, a book manscript draft, correspondence with Glenda Morrison and Joseph Santana, publications, photographs, and cigar making artifacts.

Nine interviewees were interviewed by Glenda Morrison: Jane Abell, Caddie Palmer, and Lucille Young; Erma Holder; Burkley McCarthy, Anna Orr; Louise Russel; Irene Schultze; and Agnes White. Only transcripts are available for these interviewees.

This series includes correspondence with Joseph C. Santana, a retired cigar maker whom Cooper befriended during her research; most letters are addressed to "Concha" or Mr. Santana. Cooper's then husband Don is mentioned throughout as well. Correspondence with Glenda Morrison, Francis Haber (University of Maryland), James L. Vande Berg (Highlands Presbytery), Wesley Reedy (AFL-CIO), Maria J. Fagundo (St. Elizabeth Hospital), Conchita (Santana's wife), Sam J. Calvert (The Austin Company, Leaf Tobacco, Greeneville, Tennessee), H. Aubrey Ford (Cigar Supply, Sanford, North Carolina), Suzanne Craig (Columbia College, Chicago, Illinois), and Bob (no last name) is also included.
