Biographical / Historical
Gordon Bowles (June 25, 1904- November 11, 1991), the son of Quaker missionaries, was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1904. He attended the American School while he lived there, along with his siblings. He received a bachelor's degree from Earlham University in 1925 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University in 1935. During the Occupation, Bowles worked with the State Department to help reconstruct Japan’s government and economy. After the Occupation, he became a professor at Syracuse University teaching anthropology.
