Biographical / Historical
John H. Cumberland (1924-2017) was born in Yosemite, California, and grew up in Maryland, later attending the University of Maryland in 1941. After Pearl Harbor, Cumberland enlisted in the Air Force following his years in the University of Maryland’s ROTC program through the Enlisted Reserve Corps. Cumberland served as an aviation radio operator with the 375th Troop Carrier Group during WWII. After the surrender of Imperial Japan, his squadron was the first American troops to land at Tokyo's Tachikawa airbase. He was in Japan at the beginning of the Occupation, waiting to return home to resume his college education. Cumberland completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and his Ph.D in economics at Harvard University.
