Biographical / Historical

Valentine Deale (1918-) was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and stayed in Ohio through college. After law school, Deale enrolled in the Japanese Navy Language School in Boulder, Colorado, as a civilian. In July of 1944, after intense language courses, he worked with the Navy in Washington, D.C. at the Office of Naval Intelligence on the Japan Desk. He used this training to later be part of the United States Strategic Bombing Survey in Japan, where he evaluated the effectiveness of American warfare and bombing on Japan.
