Biographical / Historical
George Furness (1896 - 1985) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and grew up in various places in New England, attending Harvard, and later went to law school. He served in the Army during WWI and in 1946 went to Japan as a civilian. During the Occupation, Furness was a defense lawyer in the War Crime Trials. He worked on an appeal with the Supreme Court of the U.S. to free the Japanese officials he was defending.
