George Furness (1896 - 1985) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in December of 1896 and grew up in various places in New England, attending Harvard, and later attended law school. He served in the Army during WWI and returned to the Army as a civilian in 1946 in Japan. During the occupation, Furness was a defense lawyer in the War Crime Trials. He worked on an appeal with the Supreme Court of the U.S. to free the Japanese officials he was defending, arguing that General MacArthur was acting unconstitutional.
